It only makes sense, then, that you want to keep your investment looking as good as possible throughout the years.

If you’re noticing some light dust buildup on your shades or sticky fingers found their way to your shutters, then you are in the right place. Here’s how to clean wood blinds, fabric shades, and more from Hunter Douglas:

Wood Blinds

Cleaning wood blinds often feels daunting at first. Though beautiful, genuine hardwood and faux wood blinds look the same, they do both have different cleaning needs. Both styles do require careful care as to not damage the slats. The key is to keep your cleaning materials gentle and your technique simple. For Hunter Douglas wood blinds, use a soft dry cloth, dusting mitt, or handheld vacuum with a brush attachment on its lowest settings to clean the slats. Moisture, steam, or scrubbing cleansers are not recommended for 100% wood. Instead, you can periodically polish your wood blinds with a recommended wood preservative.

Metal Blinds

Aluminum blinds can be cleaned by cloth, vacuuming with a brush attachment, or wiping tough stains with a lightly dampened soft cloth. For Modern Precious® Metals Mini Blinds and blinds in particular, be sure to avoid headrails and lift systems that can be damaged by water! Avoid chemical solvents, or scrubbing cleansers, as they can damage the finish of your metal blinds.

Fabric Shades

Cleaning fabric shades from Hunter Douglas will depend on which style of shade you have. Overall, the rule of thumb is using gentle technique and avoiding harsh chemicals. For example, shades that need a light cleaning will look good as new with a gentle dusting. For a deeper clean, vacuuming with a brush attachment will do the trick. They can also be spot-cleaned with a soft cloth moistened with lukewarm water. Be sure to follow the cleaning instructions for your specific shades or as one of our team members!

Shutters

Similarly, the maintenance of your shutters will depend on the style of shutters you have. In general, you can clean shutter louvers with a regular dusting via a feather duster, microfiber cloth, or a hand-held vacuum with a brush attachment for a deeper cleaning. Vinyl and faux wood shutters can be wiped with dryer sheets to reduce static cling and repel dust, but should not be exposed to abrasive cleaners or chemical solvents. Hardwood shutters are best cared for with a light dusting, spot-cleaning with a soft cloth or sponge moistened with lukewarm water, and using compressed air or a hair dryer on a cool setting to remove dust from hard-to-reach areas. For all types, regular dusting combined with occasional deeper cleaning keeps shutters looking their best.
